Background of the study
Economic self-sufficiency among students is increasingly viewed as a critical factor in fostering sustainable development in Billiri Local Government Area. Vocational education, with its practical orientation, plays a pivotal role in equipping students with entrepreneurial and technical skills that enable them to become financially independent. The integration of hands-on training and real-life business simulations in vocational programs has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academic learning and market realities (Okoro, 2023). These programs are designed to nurture not only technical proficiency but also business acumen, ensuring that students are well-prepared to create their own employment opportunities. With an emphasis on practical skills, vocational education encourages students to engage in income-generating activities that contribute to local economic growth. The training initiatives in Billiri focus on areas such as trade skills, craftsmanship, and digital literacy, enabling students to participate effectively in a diverse range of economic activities. Furthermore, vocational education fosters an entrepreneurial mindset by integrating modules on business management, marketing, and financial literacy. Such comprehensive training is vital for students who aspire to achieve economic self-reliance in a competitive market environment. The curriculum is constantly being updated to reflect emerging market trends and technological advancements, ensuring that students acquire skills that are in high demand (Nwosu, 2024). Additionally, partnerships with local businesses and mentorship programs provide students with practical exposure and networking opportunities. These collaborations help students understand the real-world implications of their training and guide them in establishing sustainable businesses. The emphasis on economic self-sufficiency through vocational education is also seen as a catalyst for community development, reducing reliance on traditional employment sectors and promoting innovation in local industries. In summary, vocational education in Billiri is not merely a training mechanism but a strategic initiative aimed at empowering students to become economically independent and contribute to the overall development of the community (Ijeoma, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the potential benefits of vocational education in promoting economic self-sufficiency, Billiri faces several challenges that impede its effectiveness. The primary issue is the persistent mismatch between the skills taught in vocational institutions and the practical needs of the marketplace. Many programs continue to emphasize theoretical knowledge over applied skills, thereby limiting students' ability to generate income independently (Ekem, 2023). Moreover, insufficient funding, outdated equipment, and a lack of qualified trainers have created an environment where students struggle to gain practical experience. This gap has resulted in graduates who, although technically skilled, are not sufficiently equipped to launch or sustain their own ventures. Another challenge is the inadequate integration of entrepreneurial training within the vocational curriculum, which is crucial for fostering a self-reliant mindset. Local businesses and investors have noted that many vocational graduates lack the necessary financial literacy and business management skills required to thrive in a competitive economic landscape (Adeniyi, 2024). Furthermore, the absence of strong industry partnerships limits opportunities for mentorship and on-the-job training, essential elements that could otherwise enhance students’ practical knowledge. The systemic shortcomings in curriculum design and resource allocation underscore the need for a comprehensive review of vocational education strategies in Billiri. Without addressing these challenges, the objective of achieving economic self-sufficiency among students remains elusive, thereby impacting the broader socio-economic development of the region. This study aims to identify the root causes of these issues and propose strategic solutions to align vocational training more closely with market demands, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to become self-sufficient entrepreneurs (Okechukwu, 2024).
